Why does DAKE contain 5,000 IU of Vitamin D? Is that safe?Updated 18 days ago
The official RDA for Vitamin D sits at 600–800 IU, which reflects the minimum needed to prevent deficiency-related disease — not an optimal level for a health-conscious adult. The tolerable upper intake level set by the NIH is 4,000 IU, but that figure is widely considered conservative by researchers and clinicians working in this space. Large-scale studies and clinical practice have consistently shown 5,000 IU daily to be safe and well-tolerated in healthy adults, with toxicity only appearing at sustained intakes far above that range.
That said, Vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates in tissue, so individual response varies based on starting levels, body composition, sun exposure, and diet. This is exactly why we recommend baseline bloodwork before starting and a recheck at 90 days. A serum 25(OH)D test tells you where you actually are — and whether 5,000 IU is filling a gap or pushing you higher than needed.
